not an especially exciting hike (very flat) but the cool part is that you have water on both sides of the paved trail - the Connecticut river on one side and the canal on the other.

The trail itself is raised so you can't really get near the water except in a few places. Near the parking lot is a small spot with sand.

I saw what I think is a muskrat swimming along me in the canal and I'm definitely going to have to ride down on my bike. There were a decent amount of people out with kids and dogs and everyone is friendly.

Check out the State of CT's site for a map of state parks.

Naples

I flew down to Naples, FL to check it out. Never had been, but heard great things. I'm in the airport on my way home and I can't wait to get back. Naples is very pretty but BORING. Boring.

If you like the beach and golf you're ok. If you want much else, you're out of luck. The food is expensive and not that great. The most enjoyable food experience I had was a Mama Mia's where I got a couple of slices of good NY-Style pizza. I had some crappy cupcakes for dessert at a nearby cupcake specialty shop. I saw a reviewer on Yelp ask "Do the old people in Naples lose their tastebuds?" I have to agree.

The beach - pretty beach, but just beach. And you park at a meter and pay .25 per 10 minutes. Mmm kay. The big attraction is the fishing pier. It's just a pier. It's kinda long.

I did go to the zoo which I liked, mostly because I got there before all the kids poured in and it combines a zoo with a botanical garden. The plants were great but it was a little depressing to see the beautiful lions pacing in boredom. They have little islands with primates which are fun to watch.

Watch out for the old people drivers. They are TERRIBLE!

Brazil 2010

This year I spent the holidays in Brazil. I'm not doing a play-by-play but here are the highlights:

Bagé
Hot, humid and busy were the streets with lots of people buying sundaes and cones.

Cassino
Claimed to be the longest beach in the world, it was (thankfully) much cooler and pretty windy - though that made the intense sun barely noticeable which led to my burnt thighs.

People pushing ice cream carts honking horns, selling corn on the cob, hotdogs, sunglasses, hats and even clothes - there was always someone coming buy.

At night, people walk the avenida with some parking on the grass in chairs people watching.

New Years - New Years Eve is big at Cassino Beach (Praia do Cassino) - it's tradition to jump seven waves for good luck and they set off lots of noisy fireworks - not so much of the pretty ones, mostly just the loud ones. At midnight it sounded like we were being bombed.

Our New Years Eve dinner was a little bit of a disaster. Jose set up a nice table outside and just as he was wrapping up, it started to rain. No sweat, there is a sheltered area still outside so we started moving everything there. Jose hit a outdoor shower with the table, which dumped some water on him.

Then we had trouble getting Mauricio to calm down to eat since he's terrified of fireworks and they had already started setting them off around 6 pm.

Just as we were about to eat, the power went out. It was off for about 2 hours.

Another tradition is to eat lots of little things that symbolize abundance, like lentils and grapes. We were eating grapes and Jose reached in the dark for one that was on the table that turned out to be his father's teeth.

I elected to stay home for midnight, while Jose, Michele and Cilene went to the beach. Apparently just as 2011 arrived, it poured. I hope it's not a sign of things to come for the new year!

São José do Norte
(Literally) Sleepy little town on New Year's Day - everything was closed except for a small truck selling food. It had a pretty blue and white church, though, and was a pleasant little trip via ferry.

Here are the photos...

San Fran Afterthoughts

Some post-trip thoughts:

A friend noted that people in San Francisco don't like to wear deodorant (I noticed) and they can tell who is not local because they wear nice shoes and cologne when they go out.

I'm glad I didn't drive because 1) parking is either hard to find or really hard on really steep hills - I don't know how they don't slam into each other trying to parallel park and 2) driving over some of those crests is scurry!

Go in September or October when the weather is the nicest - it looks like a state capital building. There were some characters on the streets around there - one random woman asked me if I had a phone for sale, laughed and said she was serious because she missed her phone.

I met Jose back at the house and we had lunch at the Baker Street Bistro nearby and Jose had several coronaries while watching the Blue Angels practicing over the city for Fleet Week.

Then it was time (sort of, we arrived pretty early) to head to Menlo Park near Palo Alto for Jose's concert at St. Patrick's Seminary - nice place. The concert was actually what's believed to be the first opera in English and it was only an hour long - not bad!

After the concert, we had dinner at a Thai place in Palo Alto.

San Francisco Day 5

From California 2010

Today Jose and I went down to Pier 39 for a cruise on the harbor - it goes under the Golden Gate bridge and around Alcatraz island... it actually gets pretty close.

After that, we had lunch at the Crab House - holy fast service. They apparently take your order at your table with a wireless device because our food came literally like 5 minutes later. I had the "killer crab" which was half a dungeoness crab in garlic butter. It was good, but the garlic butter actually kind of overpowered the crab a bit.

Jose went home to rest and I did the rest of Pier 39 and the Aquarium. The Blue Angels were practicing over the harbor for Fleet Week, too. Jose told me later he wasn't able to nap because of them.

I walked up to Washington Square Park and had some really great gelato at Naia - you can get two flavors in a small cup, so I got pistachio and Ferrero Rocher - both were excellent.

I took the bus to Golden Gate park and went to the Tea Garden that Jose and I skipped the other day. I decided to go after seeing photos of it from a friend of mine. I got some tea and mochi at the tea house in the garden and spent a while just relaxing a bit.

I went to the Conservatory of Flowers just in time to see it before it closed, some very nice flowers - and the jungle room was sooo humid! My glasses fogged up as soon as I walked in.

I walked to Stow Lake just as the sun was starting to go down and ate a little of the mochi I got to go.

My friend Dante was out of work by this time so we met in Castro for dinner at Thai Chef, caught up (it had been YEARS since we'd seen each other), and he took me around to pretty much all the gay bars in the area for literally about 5 minutes each, LOL. They're all pretty small and "clubs" are pretty rare - they're really just bars and strangely enough they were showing baseball - but because the Giants were playing.

We took a quick ride to SoMa and Folsom street and then he dropped me off back at the house! It was great to see him again but by then (about 10) I was pretty tired.

San Francisco Day 4

From California 2010

Lots of walking today but not as many destinations. Jose and I went to Golden Gate park and saw the Academy of Sciences - really great museum. Aquarium, a four story rain forest with butterflies and birds, we did the planetarium show which was great...

Then we Yelped around the area looking for lunch and we settled on a Thai place for something light... Soi Gow Thai. I got lettuce wraps and a cup of coconut shrimp soup, Jose got duck fried rice.

We drove up to Lands End and walked around up there and the Sutro Baths ruins before he dropped me off at the Palace of the Legion on Honor before going to rehearsal. I checked out the art at the museum and the holocast memorial and then I walked alllllll the way down to Geary and 22nd... holy crap my knee hurt.

I took the bus from there to Presidio street and then another bus back to the Marina district again for dinner. I Yelped around there for quite a while before getting pizza at Amici's - a delicious mini pizza with roasted garlic, mushrooms and carmelized onions.

While eating the pizza, I Yelped dessert and went to Crepes a Go Go and got the most amazing giant crepe - the King Lias crepe: Nutella, bananas, coconut, almond powder and whipped cream. Smashing!

On the way back to the house I picked up a red velvet cupcake for Jose and burned a few of the calories from that crepe by walking home.

Tomorrow I'm thinking harbor cruise, bay aquarium... and I think I'm having dinner with my friend Dante.

iPhoning in San Fran

Musings on my iPhone:

One thing I've learned: Yelp is one of the best things in the world. Not only can you find just about anything near you, but you get the reviews. I definitely would have had a different dining experience on this trip without it.

My iPhone was absolutely invaluable as a GPS system. My big walk on Monday would have been much harder without it! Yay Google Maps!

Why the hell doesn't Foursquare work properly in San Francisco? My phone worked fine for data, although I am dropping calls a lot... She should have her kids taken away for lying to them like that. I jest. Mostly. I was tired.

I continued on back roads home until I drove by a southern/cajun joint in a plaza and picked up some dinner: ribs, cornbread, corn, rice and candied yams. OK, at this point I had food so I hopped on the highway for the rest of the trip home.

My feet are tired, but it was a great day and I'm going to sleep well! I burned a lot of calories today and enjoyed the fresh air.

I'll think of it as prep for my trip to San Francisco with Jose which is coming up!

Trying out the local stuff

From Connecticut

So I've lived in Connecticut for 8 years and I hardly know it. I've been to somewhat unusual locations throughout the world, but I have not seen much of the US, so I've been using my weekends to explore the area around me.

I made some half-hearted attempts to find a traveling companion but decided to go it alone like I often do when traveling abroad while Jose's rehearsing.

I had heard from a friend of mine who was CEO of a tourism board in CT that Essex was a nice, quaint town, so I drove down and checked it out.

It was nice, but really small. The one main street had some little shops and galleries and a lot of expensive cars parked along the road.

I did, however, book a cruise on the Connecticut river on the Mary E. which is based from the Connecticut River Museum. I grabbed a quick lunch at Olive Oyl's - crab cake and a shrimp thai pasta salad. Then I had perfect weather on my side and me and a boatload of older folks had a nice, relaxing time on the river.

Lots of really expensive houses, an island for sale ($1 million with a house), osprey nests... one bird of prey we couldn't quite identify. A biplane flew over us... People on the river in speedboats, though, are not very considerate. I saw one little boat almost get bowled over by the wake of a speedboat.

<img boat mentioned Gillette Castle, so I decided to head over to there after my sail.

The castle itself is a little weird looking - very craggy - and I didn't pay to go inside, but had a nice walk around the grounds (there are trails) and down to the river near the ferry.<div from three days:

Eat massively delicious food and somehow keep from becoming morbidly obese. I haven't figured out quite how they manage.

Drive like MANIACS. Holy crap. On a road with two car lanes and one for buses, they drive 5 cars wide, and that's not including the motorcycles driving between the cars. We're talking like an inch or two from their handlebars and the cars' mirrors. Eeep.

Live totally casually among ancient (ANCIENT) ruins and beautiful architecture.

Spray graffiti on anything modern.

Drink Acqua Panna. Yummmmm.

Learn how to "Ciao bella" at 2010

Our second full day in Rome had us taking the bus to the Vatican (no students - they were probably all hung over). The line to get into the basilica was INSANE. Perhaps even a mile long. We took some photos and browsed some cheesy tourist shops around St. Peter's square (there was even a calendar of hot priests!).

We walked around the wall of the Vatican to the other side where we got into the Vatican Museum with no line... but there were old people tours everywhere and at one point it was really bad - packed like the bus was! We forced our way through and pretty much ran through the museum to the Sistine Chapel, pausing ever so slightly in the hall of maps, which was probably my favorite room.

The chapel was pretty awesome - lots of people, some occasionally taking a photo and getting yelled at, and guards shhhhing people.

We found a little pizzeria and had some pizza and some crab things I love so much.

We did some shopping and I got a bunch of great shirts from a store called David Saddler... really great stuff - contrasting inner cuffs you can flip out, cuffs that have both buttons and holes for cuff links... they took a lot of my money but the woman who helped me, Andressa, was really sweet and from Sao Paulo so we talked in Portuguese.

The Castle of Angels and the Piazza del Popolo were next and by then my feet were ready to fall off. Home and then dinner at Pomodoro which had good food but Jose and I agreed our favorite restaurant was the one we went to on Our train stopped halfway there (and dumped us right at Moulin Rouge) so we took a cab the rest of the way and made it just in time to have a simple but delicious roasted chicken dinner with these AWESOME round, flat french fry type things that had garlic on them, salad and we all got dessert. I got a creme brulee, Florencia got a coconut cake and Jose got this thing I can't remember the name of - it's like meringue in a pool of creme and caramel.

We walked around for a little bit - Flo and I are going to hang out for some before the opera while Jose rehearses and then she'll go see it - I'll probably walk around somewhere or go to a museum that she suggested.

A little of this, a little of that.

Jose and I went to have coffee (well, I had another hot chocolate) with Enrique back at Circulo de las Belles Artes. We chatted with him for a couple of hours (what a great guy) and Jose had to run to the opera.

I tried to find the San Miguel market again and got some delicious canapes. I also got a couple of shirts at Zara - I love being in Europe because the clothes fit me. I'm a medium here!

I sat at the restaurant near the theater and had a glass of sangria and people watched for a little while before running back to the apartment to drop off my bag and wait for Jose outside the artist's entrance after the opera was done. Heading back I got turned around TWICE. I've never gotten lost so much in my life...

<table align="left" style="margin-right: 10px; Dagnabbit!

Seville was very nice! It was like a bigger version of Cordoba. We took the bus to the Santa Cruz neighborhood after the 2.5 hour train ride (and getting up at 6:30 am) and walked around that neighborhood and the Jardines de Catalina de Ribera and Jardines de Murillo before settling on a place to eat near the Hospital de los Venerables.

We both had great food - we shared duck pate and Jose had beef stew with the meat falling apart and I had a casserole of fish, squid and shrimp. Our waiter was a nice guy and offered to take our picture.

Next we went to the Cathedral which was HUGE. The brochure said it was the biggest gothic cathedral in the world. Christopher Columbus's tomb is there. We spent quite a while there. Outside Jose got his (very expensive) fortune read by a gypsy. Another kept trying to give me a sprig of something or other but I just kept saying in Spanish, "No thanks! No thanks! I don't understand you!" Then she wanted me to pay. Yeah, right.

We walked down more streets toward the bull ring which was closed and we sat near the river to rest our feet which were very tired by then. Cobblestones and windy and slightly hilly roads take their toll.

We weren't quite sure what to do next, but I wanted to see these gardens on the map that we first thought we walked through at the beginning (the city/map are confusing just like the rest of Spain!). Turns out they were part of the Royal Alcazar palace which was also gigantic. We wanted a photo of the two of us and we asked these two girls, one of which was from Boston and the other from Rio! Daniella and Vanessa. Vanessa and Jose chattered in Portuguese and Danielle and I talked for a bit - she was enjoying our graduation present.

From Spain 2010

We were pretty tired after that so we headed to the train station to change our tickets but Jose couldn't change his, so we just hung out for a while and rested.

After returning to Madrid, we went to Vaca Argentina for dinner and had some good grub... an EXCELLENT appetizer of fried wild mushrooms with garlic mayo, I had skirt steak that was tough, Jose had a delicious flank steak and cheesy potatoes, and I had cheesecake ice cream for dessert.

I have NO idea what I'm doing tomorrow. I'm supposed to go to the opera but Jose planted the idea in my head to go to Marrakech!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://travelsofdan.blogspot.com/2010/05/i-never-looked-for-barber-dagnabbit.html' title='I never looked for a barber! there are more things I'd like to see but I don't think I will have any skin on my feet for tomorrow.

Later (5:00): So I asked a guy about his horse-drawn carriage ride and it was 46 euros for a carriage load but since I was by myself I said no thank-you and moved on. The dude chased me down for half a block (I thought I heard someone yelling!) and ended up whittling it down to 30 euros so I did it. I didn't want to walk! It wasn't worth the money but still a nice ride. I think I showed up on a lot of people's cameras on that ride and he went down some NARROW streets and almost ran down a couple of people! They literally had to leap out of the way and press themselves against walls.

I still have three and a half hours and my feet are dead. I still have to haul my ass back to the train station.

Later later: Well I hung around in the shade for a little longer and then walked back to the station and changed my ticket to come back earlier. Glad I did, really.

When I got back to the train station, I think I walked all the way around trying to find my way back home. It's a big station too, and I had to ask a policeman directions. I think I'm gonna make a grilled ham and cheese, Spanish style.

My feetos hurto

<table align="right" style="margin-right: 10px; That's what we did today. We trekked around a good portion of the Centro neighborhood, seeing many of the major points of interest: the Opera house, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and a bunch of other stuff between our apartment and the Palacio Real.

We were going to go in the palacio but the line was huge, so we went in the cathedral of Nuestra Senora de la Almudena museum and dome instead. I technically went outside around the dome, just disregard the fact that I was pressed up against the wall with the world tilting swiftly under my feet. There was a big thick glass partition but phobias are by nature illogical.

We got a little something to eat... I had anchovies on toast with mooshed tomato - it was very good. Jose had a potato/egg pancake thingy that is common around these parts.

I was pooped and dehydrated so we came back and I took a nap and Jose went off to the opera. I went to the botanical gardens and was going to look into train tickets but I realized I forgot my Eurail pass at the apartment. I'll just have to go tomorrow morning early.

I picked up some grub from a cute little vegetarian buffet place and had some other odds and ends like these potato chips that are so good - thick and crunchy and greasy.

From Spain 2010

SLEEP finally

Well, I think after two naps I went to bed around 9:00 last night and woke up after 11 this morning! It was hot and humid today so we hung out there for a while (one of the few air conditioned places).
Jose had a great idea of going out on the Zürich lake on the boat, so we did a round trip round the lake. The fire department was lifting people in cherry-picker type things just for a view, there were people dancing around in costumes, people sunning themselves by the lake.

From Europe 2009

I found a pair of pants I kind of liked but they were 30's (my size) and TOO BIG?! Either I'm losing weight with all the walking or they were running kind of big. Anyway, I almost bought the 30's but they are pretty funky and I would have a hard time finding occasions to wear them. I'm planning on doing some more shopping on Monday. I wish things weren't so damned expensive. But, I have been very good with my money so far, so...

After the 1000th Swiss town I got kind of bored and decided to go to Luzerne and go to the top of Pilatus again. I got all the way there and guess what? The upward lifts were closed. I missed the last one by like 2 hours. I thought I was going to be able to see the sun set from up there. Boo. I just got back on the train back to Zurich.

I looked around for a place to eat but being Saturday night, everything was mobbed. I got McDonalds.

Freitag

Jose and I thought and thought about what to do today... but we just ended up going downtown to do a little shopping (and bought nothing). I was hoping we'd be able to find something in our size - I did find a shirt I liked but it was about $170 or so... too expensive... That's Switzerland!

We had lunch just as it started raining hard - we both got chicken cordon bleu with fries which was very good. I almost got the hashbrown thing again because it was called something totally different on this menu!

So we've spent most of the day lounging around the apartment... surfing the net and Jose reading and practicing. Jose had an early afternoon performance so I was on my own until about 5:30.

I went down to the old town area (Niederdorfer) and had some Italian for lunch - veal scallopine with egg noodles that was all right. Then I took a train to Zug to check out that small town/city. I decided to bring back "Dan" and chatted with the girl across from me to see if she knew about the town, and she gave me a mini-tour of the city while on her way to the office (she had to work part of the day since she works for an international company).

From Europe 2009

From Europe 2009

So she showed me the city, the lake and the old part of town. I forgot everything I should have brought with the exception of my Swiss Pass: My wallet, Swiss Francs (although I had dollars, euros and pounds), and although I brought my camera, my battery remained charging in the apartment. Curses!

But I met Justin (Zhoos-tan), who lives in France with his wife, at the bahnhofplatz. We wandered somewhat aimlessly a bit while we got our bearings (which took quite a while)... we went to the Cathedral, went down to the Aare... took some cool photos. While at the Cathedral, there was a man waving a scarf, ranting and seemingly talking to unseen people near him. Justin wanted to take a picture of the famous doors, but was afraid to go close! But then the man was distracted by a woman and Justin swooped in for a couple of shots.

Then we took a long freaking hike UP to the Rose Gardens, which had surprisingly few roses, but the view from up there was beautiful. We sat there and rested our feet for a while before taking a peek at the Bear Pits (no bears though). Lunch (shweinshnitzel) and then deciding to go to Murten (Bern isn't the most exciting town but is nice).

The rail station was INSANE. The non-Bern soccer fans, dressed in red, were holed up in there surrounded by police since they are not apparently allowed to mix with the Bern fans before a game to avoid trouble. They were screaming, chanting, singing and lighting flares inside. We had to squeeze between some ticket machines and the wall to get to our train.

Murten was awesome - great weather, great views and some great chats as well. Fortunately, Justin had his camera so eventually I'll get copies of the photos we took with his. We had dinner at the middle eastern place (actually I've eaten there before) and had a really good doner kebab pizza! Doner meat on a pizza. It was really good!

Murten was even better than my last trip - lots of young people playing volleyball, a very outgoing little boy (maybe 2 years old) that would swing by for visits... we never did make it up on the walls of the town, though.

I got back to Zurich about 11:00 pm...

Appenzell

I wanted to see Ebenalp near Appenzell - it's high up on a mountain with a tiny hotel carved walkway into the side of a cliff. So I took a two-hour train ride to find a sign of the lift station door saying they were closed (I think it said until the 20th. Tomorrow). But, there was an interesting view from the bottom and there a bunch of bell-wearing cows munching on grass and clanging.

I took the train back to Appenzell and got out there. It was a cute but VERY touristy town with lots of shops with swiss army knives, thimbles and spoons. I got a cool lunch - Appenzell hash browns smothered in cheese and onions topped with a fried egg. Tasty and massively rich. The cheese smelled... interestingly (but not bad) and was very good. I poked around the shops for a bit before training on back to Zurich.

I saw a poor boy get his hand caught in the door of a tram - he was fine but did he scream. And people just walked past him to get off.... hrm. Only a couple of people yelled at the operator to open the doors.

I was sooooo sleepy when I got back to the apartment. I could have easily slept for the night at 7 but forced myself to stay up until 10.

Londres

Friday afternoon I went to the enormous Zurich airport (which is really a shopping mall with some airplanes) and took my flight to London's City Airport. Swiss Air - it was pretty hilarious that they had business class seats but they were absolutely no different except that they were 1) the first three rows and 2) they got bottles of water before take off. I was surprised we got a little orange muffin though - we don't get snacks very often on US flights any longer without paying for them.

London's City Airport was great actually - it's smaller and things went much faster than they probably would have at Heathrow. Some people tried cutting in line at immigration, and this one guy berated another for cutting, which everyone was secretly very happy about. The damn guy never moved back, though. Some people did...

The trains were soo crowded - it was rush hour - and I was about to pass out or become impregnated by someone if I had to ride for a few more stops. But, I got to Russell and Peter's, we had a delicious chicken dinner and chatted for the night.

From Europe 2009

Saturday I was planning on taking a fast train to Cambridge, but the Circle line was completely closed and the District line was closed in my area, so I tried to walk to Victoria Station but didn't make it. So, I waited until Philippe got in and we walked around quite a bit - I met him back at Victoria (after going back to Russell and Peter's for a while) and we walked all through Hyde Park and took time to smell the roses, and then back to Russell and Peter's.

We all went out to Phoenix, a pub that was very loud due to a bachelorette party in the back room but I had my first alcoholic cider (not bad!) and I got a shrimp and clam salad for dinner. It was not bad either - the clams were itty bitty ones - I had never had those before.

From Europe 2009

Philippe headed back to his hotel and Russell and Peter and I watched the voting results for the Eurovision contest. We both took the train from Paris, but when it stopped in Basel, I got off and Jose continued on to Zurich for another performance of the opera.

It took me a little while to get my bearings and a lot of looking at maps and furrowing of my brow, but I started off visiting the cathedral, which was OK. Basel isn't as picturesque as some of the other cities I've been to, but by the end of the day I liked it and it seems like there's more to DO than in Zurich.

After the cathedral I went down Freiestrasse, which is kind of like Boston's Downtown Crossing. I got my usual at Starbucks (my third time here) - Iced Soy Caramel Macchiato and a ham and cheese croissant (sooo good here). After I snarfed my croissant and people watched for a bit, I went to the Botanical Garden at the university, which was really great. Lots of photo opportunities there.

From Europe 2009

Next stop was the sculpture hall (I'm always up to see sculpture) - but this was kind of an odd collection in kind of one big room just sort of scattered about. Some were even made of Styrofoam. I'm pretty sure all of them were replicas, but I'm not sure. Hey, it was free with my Swiss Pass.

I continued my cultural streak with a stop off at the Kunstmuseum (art museum), which was MUCH better. Dali, Picasso, Van Gogh... lots of nice paintings and a larger, special Van Gogh exhibit that I didn't go to. I found that I really liked one painter - Arnold Böcklin. So I got some postcards to maybe put up at work.

From Europe 2009

Finally I returned to the visitor's center at the bahnhof and got directions (from the very nice woman that helped me at the start of my Basel visit) to Augusta Raurica. It was similar to my trip to Avenches last time - Roman ruins plopped in the middle of a regular town. Or should I say, a regular town plopped on and around Roman ruins? Thankfully the rain held off until I got back on the train. I would have visited the part of town near the Rhine but my feet were sooo tired. So I just came back to Zurich and the apartment... so I've just been updating my blog and Facebooking.

I still can't believe I am here for 11 more full days! I'm going to be able to do so much unless I spend all my money (which is a real possibility here), but I'm very glad I got the Swiss Eurorail pass before I left.

One Night in Paris, sushi, a flood, snobs and a church that was hiding from us.

One Night in Paris

Jose and I got up early early to catch the first train to Paris so he could attend a rehearsal for Arpeggiata and I could visit with some Frenchie friends. Four and a half hours later we stepped off the TGV and checked into our hotel which was thankfully very close to the train station.

We had some time before Jose had to go to rehearsal (it got delayed a bit) so we had a good lunch at Marine - we had the best appetizer - tartare of shrimp and avocado. The two were chopped and formed into a patty and served with a salad. Yum. I ordered filet mignon but ended up with pork. The waitress WAS distracted when she took the order but she was sweet and the pork was good so I didn't mind. Jose had a piece of steak with bleu cheese sauce.

Our friend Philippe met us out after that - Jose had to head off so we had some coffee, chatted and walked around ending up at the museum des arts et metiers. He had to take off so I switched off to meet Florencia there.

Florencia and I walked all over the damned planet, mostly looking for La Madeleine. We started off to eat sushi at a place Florencia really wanted to go to, but it was closed. So then we went to see the Opera house, but we couldn't take a look inside because there was a concert coming up.

So then we start hunting for La Madeleine, had trouble finding it and Florencia was getting so hungry she was going to start gnawing on pigeons, so we found a sushi place that didn't look crappy or wasn't too hot (we almost ate at a traiteur chinese buffet thing but it was 100000 degrees inside and humid). The food wasn't bad but it started pouring outside and the roof and windows started leaking, so we had to move tables twice to avoid drowning or our fish coming back to life.

Once the rain let up, we resumed our search for the church and finally found it after asking directions a few times. We got one of those cheesy coins to remember the day and then set off to search for Laduree macarons. Florencia knew it was near the church, but not exactly where. She essentially pointed at it while explaining the lovely view as we were standing on the steps, but of course we went all the way around the church before finding it.

From Europe 2009

We purchased a box of 8 and decided to eat them at Notre Dame. We were on a bus that was going the wrong direction when that occurred so we got off the bus and took the metro to ND. We sat on the steps trying to act snobbish and took pictures of ourselves. We noticed afterward that in our photos, behind us as we were decadently eating luxury desserts, there was a quite possibly homeless guy sleeping in our photos. Florencia thought he was dying (not really) just like she thought all the snails were dying near us. You had to be there.

From Europe 2009

Jose finished with rehearsals and he, of course, wanted to eat at the very area that was started our world trip, so we met our friend Florian and went to a place called Ave Maria. Florencia and I didn't really like the food but Florian and Jose loved it. The atmosphere was cool, though. We heard/told some hilarious stories, Florencia burnt her finger on a candle and I wanted to kick the butt of a woman that bumped into me as she was leaving, but then decided to wait for something and stood right behind me so I could barely get out of my chair. I essentially just pushed her aside.

Alas, the day ended there with goodbyes at the metro.

Mini Thoughts - Swiss Tidbits

Macarons are amazing but too many will make you vomit.

Swiss fountain water is apparently the quality of bottle mineral water.

Starbucks food in Europe is way better

Lots of people drink Redbull (it IS a Swiss product)

<td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; Eventually after that I fell asleep and slept until 11.

Jose and I went downtown and went to the Switzerland National Museum, but much of it was under reconstruction and there was a special exhibit that was devoted to Swiss jokes, of which we couldn’t understand most.

From Europe 2009

From Europe 2009

Then Jose went to get his hair cut and I sat with him and chatted (sort of) with him and the stylist. She was sweet and cute.

We wandered around for a little bit and took some photos before heading back to the apartment to get ready for the second performance of the opera. Sometimes we're even mediums! *GASP* I found a jacket I quite liked but I wouldn't wear it enough to justify the price tag. The exchange rate is decent but everything here is more expensive. So it's almost a 1-for-1 exchange but lunch costs $12-$15 for a cheap version. Meh.

So we did a lot of walking in OK weather - sprinkly and rainy at times. In a bit we're meeting Jory out for some dinner.

Pretty much the rest of the week is mapped out. Tomorrow is a performance, so I have during the day to do whatever, then I'm going to take pictures of Jose's costumes. Wednesday we head to Paris for a day, then we come back to Switzerland Thursday morning. Jose'll head back to Zurich and I'll hang around Basel for the day. I got to see Jory of course - it's always a ton of fun to see him - and meet some new people. I totally fell in love with the woman that played Poppea - pretty, great body, even better voice and a fun actress. I told her I wanted to marry her if she gave me these shoes she was wearing in one act... they were awesome.

Europe 2009: Outward Bound

Well, I got to Zurich in one piece. The flights were all very smooth, although I wasn't impressed with US Airways on international flights. The flight from Philly to Zurich left two hours late because a tire needed to be changed and the jack broke, they needed more nitrogen...

It took them forever to do the meal service and I just wanted to try to get some sleep. The food wasn't the worst I've had - I had some cheesy pasta dish. I was on a 767 so there weren't TV's in each seat or anything and my favorite - the little map with the plane marking the current position - was nowhere to be seen either.

Yes Man was the in-flight movie, although I only watched bits... without headphones - I don't know if they ever got the sound working.

But now I'm in Jose's small one-room apartment that the Opernhaus owns which is in a very attractive (though a little out of the way) neighborhood. To get there from downtown, you take a train, then the Dolderbahn (almost like a funicular) up the hill a couple of stops.

Jose's making some pork stewy thing for dinner...

Tonight is the opening of the Opera Aggripina - I'll attend this performance and we're going to a party afterward.

The only mask-wearing weirdness I saw was generally foreigners in the Philadelphia airport. And, generally people seemed less airport-stupid than I've seen on previous trips. So far, so good!

What's Next?

Besides a long weekend in Charleston, my next big trip takes me back to Switzerland and London. type='text'>Home Again

Well, I got back home at around noon on Wednesday, and my luggage arrived home around 8:30 pm. It got a little lost at JFK. Jose and I left Bage on Monday, stopping at the Federal Police to have my passport stamped, and headed out to the border town of Acegua. We got my passport stamped for Uruguay and visited his Aunt Nelli and saw a little cemetery where some family members are.

We stopped in Melo quickly for a little bite to eat where I found out for the first time that mating dogs get stuck together for a while. They were stuck right on the sidewalk where we were eating lunch. Interesting.

I drove a bit between a gas station near Melo to Minas and Jose took over (thankfully) until we got to Eduardo's back in Montevideo. Eduardo made a delicious meal that was kind of like shepard's pie, but more flavorful. We watched a TV program about Bernini before I headed to bed. We left for the airport relatively early, but stopped to see Tia Maria at the Rambla and drove the scenic route to the airport.

I miss my new Brazilian friends but I'm happy to be home again. I had taco bell (something of a tradition after coming home from the airport nowadays) and I had sushi for dinner tonight. In Brazil none of the food was spicy and though there was some sushi in Porto Alegre, I didn't want to try it out in a place unknown to me (I hesitate depending on where I am in the US, too).

The first part of the video below is Mauricio singing about eating... I think he made himself hungry.
